Uncompahgre Chapter Wraps Up the Trailbuilding Season

November 8, 2013

On October 24th the COPMOBA’s Uncompahgre Chapter wrapped up a very successful trailbuilding season with a tap night at 2 Rascals Brewing Co.  The main event for the celebration was a showing of “Klunkerz” – a movie about the beginnings of mountain biking in Marin County, CA and Crested Butte, CO.   Over 60 people attended the event that included a swag give-away, a power point presentation about this year’s trail accomplishments and a silent auction.

The evening’s celebration was kicked off by Laurie Brandt, COPMOBA board member, thanking all the volunteers who helped with trailbuilding this year, and recognizing all those who donated to the swag give-away and silent auction.  Thanks to Cascade Bicycles, Primal Wear, Mountain Khakis and Kona for donating items.

2 Rascals Brewing Co. proprietors, Brandon and Dan, have opened up their place to mountain bikers all year.  They have hosted several post-trail work parties, allowing COPMOBA Quick read more or view full article to prepare a picnic for volunteers, and provided beverages for them.  A portion of the evening’s beer sales will be donated to COPMOBA’s Cerro Summit Trails fund.  It certainly doesn’t hurt that they serve a tasty product.

2013 has been a record-breaking year for the chapter.  88 volunteers donated 472 hours to our trail efforts.  5 miles of trail were built.  The popular Buzzard Gulch trail system was officially recognized and mapped.  The Cerro Summit Trails project was initiated with $4500 raised to fund the initial phase of the project.  Currently COPMOBA and other partners are working with the City of Montrose to apply for a State Trails Grant to complete the trails project on Cerro Summit.

The evening’s activities were highlighted with the presentation of a “ Bikerpelli” Lifetime Achievement  Award to Ralph Files, recognizing his contributions to local trail efforts.  Since 1986 Ralph has been active in all aspects mountain bike trail advocacy and youth participation in mountain biking.  He served on the COPMOBA board and Uncompahgre chapter committee for many years.  In his spare time he’s “riding it forward” taking grandson, Logan, on bike rides.

Again, thanks to all who helped COPMOBA put together a great 2013.
