Uncompahgre Chapter 2014 Outlook

February 6, 2014
Wednesday, February 12 at 7 pm at Cascade Bicycles – This is our big planning meeting to select dates for events and trail work days and determine our goals for the year.  Please join us to provide input and help with the tasks.

Buzzard Gulch – BLM UFO Dry Creek Travel Management Area

There are currently 9+ miles of trail that are signed and mapped.  It is located 10 minutes (drive) southwest of Montrose at the edge of Spring Creek Mesa and the Uncompahgre Plateau.  It is accessed from Dave Wood Road and Popular Road.  This is the closest non-motorized trail system to Montrose and it is well used by hikers, mtn bikers and horseback riders.  We are planning with the BLM to build 3 more miles of singletrack in 2014.  We will connect north mesa Jeep road with singletrack and Lower Spring Creek trail with Buzzard Quick read more or view full article Gulch.  It will open up access to a 5-6 mile loop in Spring Canyon.  We are planning several trail work days this spring, dates TBD once firmed up with the BLM.

Cerro Summit Trails – City of Montrose (110 acres)

The Cerro Summit Trails project is a true community effort.  The City of Montrose owns 110 acres of land on the south side of Highway 50 at Cerro Summit and they have supported the use of this land for non-motorized trails.  Along with private donors, the Montrose Rotary Club, Edward Jones Investments, Jolley Smiles Orthodontics, Treefeather Creative, Cascade Bicycles, Mesa Family Chiropractic, Pediatric Associates, Montrose Dermatology, Two Rascals Brewing Company, Alpine Archaeology, and Colorado West Ophthalmology have donated to the trail project.  The Chipeta Chapter, Colorado Archaeological Society under the supervision of Alpine Archaeological Consultants has performed a cultural resources clearance of the property.  The lower loop was built in 2013 and other loops are in progress.  With the City’s help, we are pursuing a grant for more funds to help pay for Phase 2 of the project, which will have permanent facilities, improved parking, and more trail features.  Several trail work days are planned for 2014, dates TBD.
