RAT/COPMOBA Upcoming 2014 Plans

February 6, 2014
COPMOBA'S Ridgway Area Trails Chapter (RAT) has large plans for the summer of 2014.  We've begun preparation for this year's 4th Annual RAT FEST, scheduled for Ridgway Town Park on May 31, 2014.  Festivities will include live music (presently working to book Denver band James and the Devil), fresh food from local restaurants, craft beer from the award-winning Ridgway artisans at Colorado Boy Brewery, live auction, silent auction, bike demos, kids attractions and much more.

But RAT FEST does not even top our list of priorities for 2014.  This year we hope to complete build out of 15+ miles of new, rocking single-track on BLM land just north of and adjacent to Ridgway.  We completed the planning and approval process for this project in 2013 and, with assistance and leadership from the BLM's Uncompahgre Field Office (BLM UFO), built approximately 2 miles of new trail.  For 2014, BLM UFO has made our trails their top recreational priority.

We will meet with BLM UFO Manager Barb Sharrow and other key BLM personnel on February 10th to iron out details.  Among other things, we will finalize BLM's plans to bring Volunteers for Outdoor Colorado (VOC) to Ridgway for a major Quick read more or view full article event in May.  VOC is one of the premier trail planning, training, construction and maintenance organizations in Colorado and we will organize a major effort around their visit.

We also have plans to partner with Southwest Youth Conservation Corps and the National Civilian Community Corps to put several dedicated, professional, trail construction crews on the ground continuously for at least 8 weeks during the summer.  That commitment will require substantial funding and we have applied for grants from 4 separate charitable foundations to fund our efforts. Of course, regardless how many paid boots we have on the ground, we will organize multiple volunteer work dates as well.

We will also host a movie and beer, winter fund raiser March 17th at the Sherbino Theatre on Historic Clinton Street in Ridgway.

Stay tuned at copmoba.org and ridwaytrails.com for more details about RAT FEST, VOC, summer trail construction and, most importantly, great trail riding in Ouray County.   Read Less
